I had always assumed that most of the strange Australian animals were also native to New Zealand. In fact, New Zealand has no native land mammals at all. Traditionally, the only animals here have been birds and a few bats. I passed lots of areas today where poison has been put down to try to kill the mammals and protect the birds.
