This bay is famous for yellow-eyed penguins, also known as hoiho, possibly the world's rarest species of penguin. At this time of year, the chicks are being reared in nests hidden in the trees above the bay. Each day, one parent stays with the chicks and the other goes to catch fish. In the evening, the hunters return and make their way back across the petrified forest back to the nests. Today, the evening has come near low tide so they have quite a long way to walk.
