Petrol is getting more expensive as I move into this remote area. Between Melbourne and Adelaide, it was about $1.50 to $1.60 per litre. Now it's over $2.

Out of interest, and to help prevent me running out of fuel, I've been noting how far I go between each refuelling and how much fuel gets used. The van is averaging about 9 km per litre, which is something like 25 miles per gallon. Perhaps I should have also noted whether I used the normal or the premium petrol each time so that I can see whether that actually affects how far I can go on a tank. The calculations would have been complicated though because at any time there's a mixture of both kinds in the tank.

Given how thirsty it is, this van has a remarkably small petrol tank. It's about 35 litres so I can't rely on it going more than about 250 km between refuellings. The silly thing is that that's about the same distance that I would be able to do on the bike on flat ground like this with this tailwind and 14 hours of daylight if I had had a rest the previous day, so the distance between roadhouses is of as much concern to me now as it would have been if I was cycling. To be on the safe side, I'm refuelling at almost every one.
