Adelaide is very busy because of major cycling event, the Tour Down Under. The racing starts tomorrow but the teams are being presented to the public right now at a big festival in the main square. Apart from two youth hostels, there are only three or four hotels with any rooms available and strangely, the cheapest of those is the Hilton right on the main square so I've booked that.

The problem is that some of the streets around it are closed and all the parking spaces on the road are full, and wouldn't allow me to park for more than a few hours anyway, but all the multi-storey car parks seem to be closed for the night. I read that the hotel has its own car park but it's very expensive and I couldn't find anywhere to stop for long enough to even phone the hotel and ask where its car park was. I drove round for the same streets a few times without finding a suitable spot. Then I remembered that I had the bike in the back of the van so I could drive out of the city centre to somewhere where I could park for free and ride back. It didn't take long before I found this street which has loads of free parking and is close enough to the hotel that I didn't even bother with the bike. I can leave some of my luggage in the van so walking is much easier than it would be if I had both my heavy bags.

One reason why I didn't want to spend much longer looking for a space is that the terms of hire of this van say that I'm not allowed to drive at night anywhere West of Adelaide. It doesn't specify whether I can drive at night in Adelaide but I didn't want to risk it.

It's lucky that I stopped to take this picture of the van because in doing so, I realised that I had left the headlights on. It doesn't beep like most cars do to warn you if you open the door while the lights are still on.
