The board on the right gives information about Hamilton Hume and William Hovell's expedition in 1824 to find an overland route between New South Wales and the coast near what is now Melbourne. It was near here that they got back onto what would prove to be a sensible course, after following the dead end which led to the naming of the nearby Mount Disappointment. The obelisk was erected in 1924 to mark the centenary.
