The trees here look quite tropical, although Brisbane is actually about 450 km outside the tropics. For a long time I had been considering flying up to Rockhampton today, on the Tropic of Capricorn, and starting the Australian part of my ride from there. I've gone off that idea now after realising that it would involve doing rides as long as the longest of the New Zealand days, as hilly as the hilliest of the New Zealand days, with a headwind, in higher temperatures, on roads without a proper shoulder, without the long summer days that you get at more temperate latitudes. Instead of that, I'll be doing a more meandering and hopefully more easy-going ride, kind of making it up as I go along. There's only one place where I would particularly like to be at a specific time.

What's hard for me to comprehend at the moment is that if all goes well, the Australian section of this trip, which started about an hour ago, will itself be longer than any of my previous holidays.
