On close inspection, the red tree which was providing the shade in Wairoa looks to be closely related to that toilet brush tree. CreativeCrocheter has now informed me that this is a pohutukawa, or New Zealand Christmas tree. I was nearly right about the toilet brush trees. They are actually called bottlebrush trees, members of the Callistemon genus.
