Napier was destroyed by an earthquake and ensuing fires in 1931, and had to be entirely rebuilt. Very little other city centre development was going on anywhere in the world at the time because of the Great Depression. As a result, Napier is now famous for its unique collection of Art Deco buildings. These days, the city plays on its Deco appearance, such as with this sightseeing bus.
