At the Moeraki boulders, the sandy beach was so flat that an incoming wave would continue to trundle across the sand for about 20 seconds. Here, the beach is so steep that it only takes about a second for a wave to crash and recede, accompanied by a lovely clattering sound as it drags pebbles over each other.
