One of the Moeraki boulders. Each of these boulders started with a small pebble which became buried in the sea bed. Layers of lime then accumulated around it to form a giant hard sphere buried within softer rock. After that, the land became lifted above sea level and then gradually eroded. As the cliffs receeded, the boulders buried inside were revealed and fell onto the beach.
