Up to this point, I had still been hoping to catch the ferry this evening. I made good time for the first few hours through Berkshire and again for the last couple of hours here in Essex. The urban section in between slowed me down though; not because I was stopping to take pictures but because of dreadful traffic all the way out of the city. Here in Ingatestone, I saw a sign saying that the port is about 12 km further away than I thought, encountered a heavy shower with rumbles of thunder and then, after sitting down to take shelter, felt the effects of three nights with not enough sleep. My big toe also hurts from an injury which I sustained near Heathrow and which has turned the whole nail purple. I've therefore decided to abandon that plan and look for a hotel nearby.

All the hotels in the nearby town of Chelmsford are full because of another music festival so I would first try heading for what I thought was Great Dunmow but, due to a deficiency with my map, turned out to be High Ongar, before returning to Brentwood, a town which I have already visited.

Now I'll have to wait two days for the ferry to go to Denmark and come back again before I can get on it. It doesn't really matter though. Preliminary polling results suggest that people want ne to go to Iceland and I'll end up on the same ferry to there whether I leave England today or Tuesday.
