 This is the rocky promontory of Reykjanes, "Smoky Point", a stark, rocky, almost uninhabitable corner of Iceland which was chosen as the site of a World War II American military airfield, which subsequently grew into Iceland's international airport. That's why there's now a major road running all out to here from Reykjavik.
