When I came to disassemble my bike, I realised that I had forgotten to bring a spanner suitable for getting the pedals off. Icelandair, like many airlines, specified that all bikes being transported must have pedals removed. I've been driving around for nearly two hours trying to find a DIY shop which was open on a Sunday. It's not easy because Iceland has very few shops in chains which I've seen anywhere else so it's often hard to tell what a shop is without going inside. This is the retail park which appears on the right of picture 1039, where I found these spanners in what was really a soft furnishings shop. They were surprisingly reasonably priced, especially for Iceland, coming out at about £1 per spanner, and did the job perfectly. It's a bit silly though that at the time when I was intending to trim down my belongings so that I would be within the airline's luggage limits, I've now acquired all these spanners.

All this makes me very glad that I decided to come home instead of pursuing my original plan and going to Canada. If I had ridden up to the airport tomorrow afternoon, without a car, begun to disassemble the bike and then found I didn't have the right tools, I would have been really stuck.
