Now this is a new one. The gear changing mechanism has rotated around the shaft so the chain won't go round any more. Last night's servicing of the bike is looking a bit pointless now. One thing I did was change the chain. Another was swap the tyres over. The back tyre wears down more quickly than the front because it carries more weight. I swapped them so that they would last for a bit longer. However, today, the old back tyre, now on the front, has worn down enough to expose the coloured layer which means it hasn't got much life left.

I'm only about an hour's walk from my hotel now so I will do that instead of trying to fix this on the street. I don't know what I will do after that. All the way through Serbia, I was hoping that nothing serious would happen to the bike because if I had to abandon it and leave the country some other way, it would make it hard to explain to the police what I had been doing. As soon as I entered Bulgaria, giving up the ride became much easier and now that I'm in the capital, it would merely be a matter of calling a taxi to the airport in the morning and pretending I never had a bike.
