 Downtown Novi Sad. I phoned the British embassy this morning and they told me to to to see the tourist police while I was here, in case they made me go back to the border. This morning's hotel receptionist didn't think I had a problem at all but, when pressed, told me where the police station was. It was hidden upstairs in an anonymous building which looked like a very dingy bank downstairs. I didn't take a photograph of it but I could have done because there were no obvious police there to object. Stupidly, while I made sure I took all the available evidence of where I had been, I forgot to take my phrasebook. The tourist police, if that is who I saw, were about the only people I have met do far who didn't speak English. Even when they did understand why I was there, they still didn't seem to understand why I thought my lack of a stamp was a problem, as long as I kept my registration cards from hotels. While I was out and about in the daytime without the bike, I thought I would do a bit of shopping. A lot of the shops here look rather run-down on the outside but the goods inside are the kind of thing you would expect in the main shopping area of a country's second city and are priced accordingly. I did manage to find a £14 pair of lightweight evening trousers on the market though, to replace my existing pair. There was much miming involved in buying those, which was fun. I don't know why my old pair have worn through on the backside. I haven't been wearing them on the bike. I bought some sun lotion too. The pharmacist seemed to want to show off not just his English but also his in-depth knowledge of skin care products. He sold me a bottle of rejuvenating herbal lotion from Montenegro.
