 St. Mark's Square. I considered going up the tower but it seems the only way up is in a lift, which would be against the spirit of my trip. Still, things could be worse. I wasn't sure if it would be possible to get around Venice at all without using boats. I'm afraid I did use a lift in Bourg-Saint-Pierre, when the elderly woman running the hotel showed me to my room, and I inadvertantly used an escalator in a department store in Lausanne.
