I tried using the phone again in Scott City, without any luck. This was a different type of phone. When I dialled the number, a voice told me to deposit 50 cents, then another 25, then another 25. After that, the phone booped for a while and then chucked the money back at me.

I think a motel which appears to have had its phone cut off is a less promising option than a motel about which I know nothing. Tribune will be the last town for 58 miles and I don't want to turn up there and find out that the motel doesn't exist. I don't fancy going much further in this wind anyway so I'm intending to stop in Leoti, 20 miles from here and 20 miles before Tribune. I've already passed an advertisement for the motel there. It's called the 'Hi-Plains Motel and Restaurant' although I know enough about hotels by now to know that the restaurant will be shut.

A man just came to talk to me. He reckoned that the area around Dodge City, not far from here, has the most consistent wind in the world. If the wind is going to stay like it is at the moment, it could be a while before I reach Colorado.
