I was expecting this. A few minutes ago, I had barely aligned myself onto this road, which the cycle route is meant to follow in a straight line for 75 km, when I spotted a cyclist coming the other way. He said that he had had to scramble under two barbed wire fences and ford a waist-deep river to get through here. I didn't much fancy the sound of that and so, after a few minutes pondering, decided to return to state route 96 and stay on that for the whole day. The cycle route was due to meet up with it again eventually and as I didn't have a map of the cycle route anyway, it seemed like the easiest option. I know by now that apart from the interstates, no roads in the US carry much traffic and the main roads almost always have good wide shoulders.
